On the Eve of Christmas My True Love Gave to Me...

Holiday Wishes From Your State Secretary!!

Empowerment is a concept that nurses constantly strive to obtain. The World Bank defines empowerment as "the process of increasing the capacity of individuals or groups to make choices and to transform those choices into desired actions and outcomes". Through empowerment we are enabled to advocate for ourselves and others. The autonomy of advanced practice nurses is ensured via the power and respect that we have negotiated and continue to fight for.

Speaking your mind is central to the self-expression of your truths. According to Loria A. Brown in her article titled The Empowerment Of Speaking Your Mind (2013) "We as nurses need to be healthy to take care of our patients and ourselves.  By expressing yourself, you can make yourself happy by speaking your truths and, when you are happy, others around you will be happy as well."

Check out Loria A. Brown's full article and her website devoted to empowerment and advocacy.

There is strength in numbers. Continue to encourage all the RN's, Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Specialists, Nurse Anesthetists and Nurse Midwives that you know to join and maintain their UAPRN memberships.

Wishing you the best for this holiday season,

Michelle A. Nelson PhD, RN, MS, FNP-BC
